What are the rare cents?

Rare cents are U.S. coins from certain years, mints and even varieties of a certain year that are more valuable than their face value due to their rarity and condition. This includes coins from the Lincoln Cent series, which was first issued in 1909, all the way through the modern Lincoln Memorial cent which was last issued in 2008.

One of the most famous and sought after rare cents is the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent.

This coin was first released with a design element to honor the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and features a bust of Lincoln on the obverse and two wheat ears on the reverse. The coins were released with a VDB initials on the lower right side of the reverse, which stands for Victor David Brenner, the designer of the coin. These coins were only minted in 1909 at the San Francisco Mint and are extremely rare with fewer than 500,000 released. A uncirculated example can easily fetch prices over $20,000 and even worn examples can sell for over $1,000.

Another popular coin is the 1922 No D or Plain Lincoln cent.

This coin was also struck at the San Francisco Mint, but instead of containing the mint mark “S” like other coins from this year, it was accidentally struck without it. As a result, it is very rare with only between 10 and 20 known to exist and can command price of up to $20,000 or more.

Finally, another rare cent is the 1927-D or $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle. This coin was struck by the Denver Mint and was minted for only one year making them quite scarce. In addition to being rare, these coins are also very beautiful with an eagle design on the reverse side. Prices for this coin can range from $10,000 to $20,000 depending on its condition.
