Here you can order the EU card for free and read what applies if you are temporarily staying abroad and need medical or dental care.
Order an EU card for travel within the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Great Britain
Order an EU card before traveling within the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Great Britain. Children must have their own EU card.
Many people order EU cards now
Many people order EU cards from us now. Therefore, order your EU card well in advance of your departure. The delivery time is up to 10 working days. Försäkringskassan cannot speed up the delivery of the EU card. Do not order the EU card more than once.
What happens if I don’t get my EU card in time?
If you do not have time to get your card before you travel and should become acutely ill while you are abroad, you or your caregiver can call us at 0771‑524 524 to get a provisional certificate. You or your caregiver must state your Swedish social security number. The Swedish Social Insurance Agency cannot issue a provisional certificate in advance. From which country should I order an EU card?
If you are covered by the social security legislation of another country within the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Great Britain, you must order the card from that country. Which country’s legislation you are subject to depends on where you live and work.
Reimbursement for care or dental care afterward
If you do not have an EU card, you can apply for reimbursement for healthcare or dental care afterward.
When you apply, you must attach digital copies of receipts and medical documents. If you don’t already have the documents as files on your computer, you can take photos of them with your phone or scan them in. If you cannot add the attachments at the same time as you make your application, it is fine to attach them afterward. Remember to do it as soon as possible.
Do I need an EU card when traveling within the Nordic countries?
No, if you are going to travel within the Nordic countries, you do not need an EU card. To receive the necessary care, it is enough to show an ID document and state your residential address in Sweden. If your child needs necessary care, he needs his own ID document. If your child does not have his own ID document, we recommend that you bring the child’s EU card with you.
National contact points
Each country has one or more national contact points that inform about opportunities for care within the EU/EEA. The list of national contact points can be found here:
If you are going to travel outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Great Britain
Outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Great Britain, the EU card is not valid. That is why it is important that you have private insurance. Find out what is included in your home insurance and whether you need additional travel insurance.
But there are some countries outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Great Britain with which Sweden has agreements on healthcare benefits.
Do I need to notify Försäkringskassan if I will be abroad for a longer period of time?
Yes, if you receive compensation from the Social Insurance Agency, both a move and a longer stay abroad can affect your right to continue receiving compensation. What counts as a longer stay varies depending on the compensation you receive. It is your responsibility to find out what applies to you. It is also your responsibility to notify us if anything changes in your situation that affects your right to compensation. You will find more information on the pages for the respective compensation. You can also contact us if you are unsure about what applies to you. Empowermant student
